Is Goobi happier than me?
Things you have to know before:
Goobi is my cat and though he may be of the member of the cat family, he is also a member of “The Alvares Family”. To us, he is just like Hobbes is to Calvin.
Here Goes:
This is kind of a weird thought as it is common belief that humans are superior beings, rational beings. Humans have evolved from murdering bushwhackers to what we call civilized sentient beings. We have learnt to harness the resources and put them to our use. We have used animals themselves in many of the freaky things that we do.
But, can we positively say that we are happier than animals? Now I wont go into details of all animals, but will stress on Goobi, the household sleeper coach. He’s got food, and sleep. That’s all he needs and also, what he wants.
According to the Gautam Buddha “Both birth and death bring grief and life is vain. The vanity in life is caused by the indulgence in desire. Vanity ends with the ending of desire. And sane and intelligent decency can end all desire”
So, coming back to the question of whether Goobi is happier than me or not, I would say that he would have an edge over those desires than me. He wants nothing. I want an iMac, Logitech Z-680 speakers, Ford Ikon and whatnot which can be a never ending list. “I want to be just a little bit richer” is what everyone says. I realized that it doesn’t end when I was talking to this guy who is much richer than me, and he said “if I was little richer, I would have afforded so-and-so car, those babies are sweet”. Just to mention one thing, he owns a car which is in the same category as the Ford Ikon. Now if I had an Ikon, I would have certainly wanted one of those Accord things, and if I had that, I would have wanted a Merc and the stuff would go on and on.
But in Goobi’s case, the whole thing ends at fish (or, the basic necessities of his life). Nothing more, nothing less. Although, he might be affected in his thoughts cause we did castrate him, but that was just to save his life. He had joined the local cat mafia and was injuring himself.
But to correctly answer the question, we must understand what happiness means. To that, I will have to take some time off, collect the few thoughts that are spawned in my brain and waste your time…
