The Decline Of The Movie Theater

So, have you gone to the movies lately? Let’s face it, in this day and age, going to the movies isn’t what it’s cracked up to be. Recent studies have shown that box office ticket sales have steadily declined over the years and the reason is simple - years ago, if people wanted to see a movie, they had no other choice other than going to the theater. I don’t know about you, but I don’t remember the last time I had a pleasant “movie going” experience. Let’s look at what’s involved. First, you have to find out the times and the movies that are playing. Next you have to get in the car and drive to the theater giving yourself enough time to park, get your tickets, buy your popcorn, etc. Okay, now your all set and you enter the appropriate theater room and find your seat. The movie begins and here come the distractions. You have all the people straggling in that are late, fumbling around in the dark trying to find their seat, you have the whisperers, the plastic crinklers, the cell phone talkers … I think you get the point. By the way, I didn’t even mention the price of admission. Where I am from, it costs about $7.50 US Dollars per person. Bring your significant other, kids or whoever else and thow in the cost of snacks ….. This is Big Bucks!

The Madness of Madagascar

When I saw that this movie had Chris Rock and Ben Stiller in it – and it was created by the creators of Shrek, I was so there. I would’ve gone even if I didn’t have children. I felt it would be that good. So, the day arrives. The movie premieres and, my kids and I are at the theater. The film starts.

I’m not impressed. It’s not nearly as funny as it could be. Sure, the lithe Jada Pinkett Smith as a hippo named Gloria is cute and a wee bit sassy. Yes, Chris Rock as the wise-cracking Marty the Zebra who wants to return to Mother Africa has potential. David Schwimmer is annoying and whiny as the hypochondriac giraffe, Melman. Ben Stiller is Alex the Lion. He is the star of the show at the Zoo.

Wedding Crashers: Comedy at Its Finest

With every comedy release, the critic world is buzzing. It is never a polite buzz however as most comedies coming out year after year end up on the back end of the DVD shelf with no visitors in sight. However, once in a while a director will hit it big. Sparks will fly, and the people will be saying “This is a fantastic movie.” After sitting through hours of laughter, entertainment and laughs that filled the movie theatre I realized, this movie was it. The comedy of the year is as good a title for the movie “Wedding Crashers” as a critic could come up with.

Constant Gardener: Movie Review

A murder mystery combines beautifully with a love story in what is one of the best movies of this season. In “The Constant Gardener” Fernando Meirelles takes us through an epic journey that spans Europe and Africa in a haunting depiction of the sordid reality behind the practices of some of today’s pharmaceutical giants, and the profound power of love even beyond death.

People Who Make a Difference - Get Smart - “Missed it… by that much!”

There would hardly be a single person on the entire planet who has not seen at least one episode of the 1960’s TV comedy “Get Smart.” Yes I am talking about that bumbling Agent 86 - Maxwell Smart.
I know that as a young boy growing up I used to love the crazy antics of this show - KAOS, Control, Agent 99 (Barbara Feldon), bad guy Siegfried, the Chief (Edward Platt), Himey the humanoid, Larabie who always hid in the strangest places, the useless “cone of silence,” the shoe phone and much more.

Animation Movies…where to?

If we take a look at the recent releases, there is no major movie based on 2D animation. Is 2D animation worn out, or just not commercial enough? Even if those classic animations are always a pleasure to watch, you have to admit that the modern animation is more attractive. They are more real, and people seem to love that. If we take a look at the box office, we see 2 animation movies in top 10 (Shrek 2 and Finding Nemo) with 1,7 billion dollars revenue. That is amazing. And for both movies CGI (Computer-Generated Imagery) was used.

New DVD releases for November 2005

As winter approaches, it is time to think about ways to entertain ourselves during the coldest months of the year. Some of you might be interested in outdoor sports like skiing or snowboarding, but I am more concerned with simply staying warm.
